Chapter Eleven

Karma

“So?” Layne practically throws herself into the bench across from me.

“Hello to you too.” I take a sip of my coffee. Layne’s the only person who ever shows up anywhere after me. And that’s only because she takes into consideration how late I’ll be and then adds another ten minutes just to be sure she doesn’t have to wait. She hates waiting.

“Spare me. You and I both know I hauled my cookies over here today for one reason and one reason only.”

She makes it sound like she had far to go. It’s a twenty-minute drive from her side of town to mine. But she’s closing in on the final chapters of her manuscript and tends to hole up when she reaches this point, so maybe that’s what she’s referring to.

“Did you want to order anything?” I point at the cute guy in his vest and tie standing behind her. Generally, people have to go up to the counter to order around here, but I frequent the place often enough, usually with a laptop in hand and strict orders to keep the coffee flowing, so I’ve earned the VIP treatment. That, and I tip like a mad woman.

Layne turns back, slightly frazzled under the pressure. “Uh, hot chocolate, please?”

I shake my head in disgust. “You know, you’re a disappointment to writers everywhere.”

“Bite me.”

“Did you want to order a side of marshmallows with that?” I tease.

“Ooh, do you have those?” she asks the poor guy still bound to our table and at our mercy.

“Sorry. No. I can do whipped cream though,” he offers.

Clearly bummed, Layne just shrugs. “Yeah, I guess.”

I smile at the guy, letting him know he’s clear to make a run for it, and he does.

“Alright. I ordered. You ridiculed. Now, tell me about your date with Jensen.” She’s practically frothing at the mouth as she leans over the table to get closer as if she’s afraid she might miss something from her side of the booth.

“Well, it was pretty freaking amazing.” I can’t even contain the smile anymore. I stopped trying sometime between getting home last night and having coffee this morning at my desk, reading the text message he sent first thing when he got up...while I was still sleeping.

“You’re going to have to give me more than that,” she scolds.

“I’m not sure I can.”

“What the hell does that mean? Are you bound by some sort of secret keeping contract he made you sign before the date?” She’s not even kidding. I guess it’s not too shocking. Shit like that happens in novels all the damn time.

“No, dork. This isn’t fifty shades of Stanley. I don’t know if I can tell you what made it so amazing because I don’t know how to put it into words. Like, breaking down the date for you, every step of the way, every topic of conversation, it just wouldn’t even come close to explaining why he made me feel the way he made me feel.”

She makes a face. “Well, try. Whatever the hell he did has you beaming brighter than the sun at high noon.
